ONA Announces 2021 Online Journalism Award Winners | Your money
PHILADELPHIA, Oct 15, 2021 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) – Inspirational journalism projects covering climate change, the Himalayan ghost cats, the political crisis in Hong Kong and the US public health system were among the finalists and winners honored Oct. 15 in the 2021 Online Journalism Awards – the annual global showcase for digital innovation administered by the Online News Association (ONA).
The winners were announced online and at a ceremony in Philadelphia, where ONA reconnected the journalist community at the association’s first in-person conference in two years. The Lenfest Institute for Journalism provided support for the organization of the OJA 2021 reception and ceremony.
Special guests included Gina Chua, editor-in-chief of Reuters, who was honored as the first recipient of the Impact Award for her dedication to innovation in visual storytelling and her unwavering commitment to mentoring journalists and solving problems. structural industry. Selected by the ONA Board of Directors, the Impact Prize rewards pioneering individuals who have had a substantial impact on the industry, regardless of their seniority in journalism or their involvement with ONA.
Five distinctions in the OJA 2021 come with a total of $ 40,000 in prizes. PublicSource, Grist, ProPublica and The New York Times each received a $ 5,000 award for General Excellence in Online Journalism, supported by SmartNews. The Topical Reporting: Climate Change award went to Grist, with a prize of $ 5,000 donated by McKinsey Publishing.
The 2021 Knight Prize for Public Service, with a $ 5,000 prize supported by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, recognized THE CITY for its “Missing Them” project, a local empowerment project aimed at find and commemorate those who have died from Covid-19 in New York City.
The Gather Award in Engaged Journalism is matched with $ 2,500 in each of the two subcategories, courtesy of the University of Oregon School of Journalism and Communications. ONA has expanded this year’s competition with two new awards: Topical Reporting: Pandemic Coverage and Excellence in Social Justice Reporting. The winners in these categories were the Washington Post, USA Today, News & Observer and ProPublica.
The OJAs 2021 also redesigned the recognition of student work, with two subcategories in the new student journalism award. Brett Marsh of the University of California at Berkeley, Graduate School of Journalism received the award in the Student Portfolio subcategory. Two winners were recognized for the Student Team Portfolio Award: the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism at Arizona State University and the Newhouse School at Syracuse University.
As part of the 2021 awards show, ONA also previously announced the 2021 recipients of three awards given by special committees to individuals or small groups. The winners included community managers from the ICFJ Global Health Crisis Reporting Forum (Paul Adepoju, Kossi Balao, Desiree Esquivel, Fadwa Kamal, Alexandre Orrico, Stella Roque) for the ONA Community Award; independent Palestinian photojournalist Samar Abu Elouf for the James Foley Prize for reporting on conflict; and Meredith Artley, senior vice president and editor of CNN Digital Worldwide, for the Founder Rich Jaroslovsky Award.
